Lyme disease is an inflammatory illness that is caused by the bacterium Borrelia Burgdorferi, transmitted to humans by the bites of infected ticks.
How to protect yourself from Lyme disease:
• Be careful in the woods and walk in the middle of trails
• Wear a hat, long-sleeved shirt fitted at the wrist, long pants
• Wear shoes, no bare feet or sandals
• Avoid sitting on logs
• Wear repellent
• Check for ticks daily
• Shower soon after being outdoors
• Call your doctor if you get a fewer or rash
Lyme Disease Symptoms in 3 Stages:
Stage 1: Early localized Lyme disease
The bacteria haven’t spread throughout the body Flu-like symptoms (fatigue, fever, headache, and muscle pain)
A round, red “bull’s eye” rash that spreads from the site of a bite might appear
Some people have no symptoms at this stage
Stage 2: Early disseminated Lyme disease
Bacteria begins to spread throughout the body
Occurs weeks or months after a bite
Headaches, facial palsy, heart palpitations and shortness of breath can occur
Pain or tingling in the hands, legs, and feet is possible
Stage 3: Late disseminated Lyme disease
Bacteria has spread throughout the body.
Can develop months or years after infection.
Pain and swelling or large joints are most common. Episodes of dizziness and fatigue may continue.
