Updated: Jun 30, 2020

Diabetics are vulnerable to infections of the feet, which can be more severe than they appear. Did you know that more than 60% of nontraumatic lower limb amputations are attributable to diabetes? With proper preventative care and ulcer treatment, many lower leg amputations can be prevented.

It is critically important for individuals with diabetes to take care of their feet. Poor blood circulation may cause foot ulcers which can be very difficult to heal. Diabetics should evaluate their feet daily as well as lotion their skin to keep hydrated. Those are the simple steps that can help to prevent the serious and unfortunate complications associated with diabetes. You should see a doctor immediately at the first sign of anything that looks concerning. You should examine your feet daily for any injury or signs of developing an infection: • Redness in one area of the feet • Warmth • Swelling in toes • Pain If you have diabetes, follow these foot care tips: • Inspect feet daily and wash with lukewarm water and soap. • Keep your feet completely dry especially between the toes. • Wear soft and comfortable socks. • Never walk barefoot even while indoors. • Be extra careful if you have corns or calluses. • See a doctor.
