Heart-Healthy Valentine’s Day Tips

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and while this year’s most romantic day might look a little bit different, that’s all the more reason to celebrate the people around you. The most important thing about this day is love! Celebrate love and life with your heart in mind.

How to improve your heart health this Valentin’s Day:

  • Keep your heart happy with exercise and healthy foods like whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Snack smart. If you are indulging, do it in moderation. Eating a little throughout the day can keep you from overdoing it at mealtimes

  • Give up some bad habits. One of the best things you can do for your heart is to give up smoking or help a loved one quit. Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death. The faster you quit the more time you gain with those you love. Plan to lower your alcohol intake

  • Send flowers or a fruit basket to your loved one instead of candy. Fruit contains natural sugar as well as healthy nutrients rather than added sugar and artificial ingredients. A couple’s day at the spa can be a stress-relieving gift and a way to spend time together

  • Manage your stress by incorporating a hobby that helps you relax, such as meditation and yoga

  • This Valentine’s day, instead of a dinner and a movie, get moving – try dance lessons, snowshoeing, bowling, or ice-skating
