How Does Obesity Increase Risk of Diseases?

The American Medical Association has officially recognized obesity as a serious chronic disease, not just a cosmetic concern. Obesity is a term that means you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (and you are overweight if you have a BMI 25 or higher). This is a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of serious health problems. People who are 40% overweight are double as likely to die early as is an average-weight person.

Did you know how obesity affects your health? Obesity makes you more likely to have conditions including:

  • Heart disease and stroke

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Some cancers

  • Gallbladder disease and gallstones

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Gout

  • Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for short episodes during sleep) and asthma

Obesity disease, which has been increasing in recent years and adversely affects one's life, is the result of unhealthy nutrition and sedentary life if you take in more calories than are burned by exercise and normal daily activities.

You can have a healthy life with your loved ones by consuming healthy foods and increasing your physical activation rate.

What are the foods that cause obesity?

  • Fast food products such as hamburgers, fried chicken, eaten chicken, mayonnaise, and sauce sandwich.

  • Boxed fruit juices with all kinds of carbonated drinks and high sugar.

  • Take-out food with high sugar and salt.

  • Sweets like dough patisserie desserts - cakes, cookies, pies, cream biscuits, and chocolates.

  • Fat milk, cheese, and oily, creamy yogurt.

  • Packaged chips, French fries, and fried food of all kinds.

  • Consuming large plate portions, food in more than one portion.

What You Can Do

  • Eat fewer calories

  • Exercise more

  • Get enough sleep

  • Limit alcohol

Obesity is a root cause of other diseases. Being overweight can lead to high blood pressure and related complications such as atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries, heart attack or heart failure, kidney failure, and more.
