Things to Know About Covid-19 This Week

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been a total of 525,496 COVID cases confirmed across Massachusetts.

We know that the mRNA vaccines are 95% effective at preventing serious illness and death. With Israel having vaccinated 50% of its population, we can see real-world data for the first time. And now, a study from there shows an 89% reduction of actual transmission of the virus, which is just incredible. This is the first step in proving what we logically expected - the vaccines prevent illness and significantly reduce spread.

A recent study in JAMA Pediatrics showed that pregnant women passed protective antibodies against covid-19 through the placenta. And that the baby received more antibodies if the mother was infected early in the pregnancy. We would expect that a vaccinated pregnant woman would also be able to pass antibodies. Pfizer announced this week that its beginning clinical trials of its mRNA vaccine in 4,000 pregnant women.

There is more evidence that wearing a cloth mask decreases your chances of getting Covid-19. A recent study in Biophysical Journal demonstrated that cloth masks increase the humidity of inhaled air, which promotes hydration of the respiratory tract. This in turn increases the upper respiratory tract's immune defense and prevents the virus from reaching the lower respiratory tract and lungs where covid-19 can cause dangerous pneumonia and hypoxia.

National vaccine rollout slowed slightly to 1.5 million/day this week due to delays in shipments from the stormy weather. Vaccine sites across the country could certainly handle more capacity if they were given more vaccines. They will soon get their wish. Vaccine delivery should increase to 20 million/week starting next week in March.

Disinfect surfaces around your home and work. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Wear a mask and avoid crowds. Maintain good physical distance (about 6 feet) to protect yourself and others from exposure. Stay safe and healthy!
