Tips for Self-Care Over Christmas

Winter holidays are here. With 2020 events considered we think this Christmas should be time spent investing in your wellbeing. Covid-19 means we must change the way we celebrate. If you must have a gathering, the fewer the people and the shorter the event the better. Hold it outside, if possible. Be careful of anyone coming from a state with high levels of COVID.

As the holiday season is in full swing make sure you keep some healthy habits intact like fermented foods and bone broth - they will help your gut survive the onslaught of all that you put into it on the go and at parties and get-togethers.

With the shorter, cooler days and longer nights, our bodies naturally need more sleep. Try going to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual in the winter months. A sleep-deprived body is more susceptible to illness. This is a busy time of year, where we tend to get out of our normal routine and put ourselves under extra pressure. Make sure you get enough sleep and rest.

While the farmer’s market may be closed, and your garden is under the snow. It’s more important than ever during the winter to get a wide variety of fruits and vegetables every single day.

Before sitting down at the table, consider these tips for healthier holiday eating

  • Don’t skip meals before a feast or you’ll be more likely to overeat

  • Start with a healthy helping of vegetables to curb your appetite

  • Cut back on carbs like potatoes and bread to save room for sweats

  • Fill a small plate with your favorite foods, then leave the buffet table

  • Avoid or limit alcohol, but if you must have some, drink it with food

  • Eat slowly: it takes 20 minutes for the brain to realize you’re full

  • Choose one dessert you love, then savor a small serving

  • Make room for physical activity, like a walk with family after a meal

Stay healthy and keep safe! We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our team!
