The winter season is a time filled with fun festivities and gatherings. It is also a time when people tend to get sick. Be prepared for cold weather that can be particularly hazardous especially for infants and the elderly. Keeping your health in peak condition will boost your immunity and make your winter season much more enjoyable.
Here are some tips to stay healthy this winter:
Dress warmly. Wear dry, loose-fitting layers that will hold your body heat and cover exposed skin, like your face and hands. Many layers trap more heat than just a big jacket alone. Make sure that your shoes have a good grip.
Exercise regularly. Staying active and working out during the cold months will keep your overall health in great shape. Exercises naturally support a healthy mood and energy levels.
Get a daily dose of Vitamin D. Vitamin D, a hormone our skin creates from sun exposure, is vital to our health. If you can’t get enough sunlight add more vitamin D-rich foods or a supplement to your diet.
Get your annual flu shot. The flu vaccine can keep you and your loved ones from getting sick with flu and other respiratory infections. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each season.
Eat healthy, nutritious meals. A healthy diet will ensure your body has the fuel it needs to stay warm. Eating warm, high-calorie foods will give your body energy. Boost your immunity with antioxidants – green tea, citrus fruits, pomegranate, etc. Eat a handful of nuts and include flaxseeds, fish, olive oil. Add freshly chopped garlic to your diet as it improves the immune system.
Take the time for extra sleep. With the shorter, cooler days and longer nights, our bodies naturally need more sleep. Try going to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual in the winter months.
If we look beyond health and safety, there are a few other things that will make our winter experience happier:
Plan a trip that will give you a much-needed break.
Meetup with your friends and family for coffee or dinners.
Relax in the sauna once in a while.
Try different winter-friendly dishes with various spices.
Do not forget to decorate your home for Christmas.
Have a healthy and safe winter! Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer, don’t touch your mouth, nose, and eyes. Cover your cough and sneezes. Stay away from people who are sick.
